"The Phonbies": an aid for children to learn to avoid the abusive use of new technologies

Yesterday the Community of Madrid presented a project through which Primary students from 50 schools will receive courses to learn how to use new technologies responsibly, thus avoiding abusive use.

The campaign called 'The Phonbies', is accompanied by the video that accompanies this entry and has also been promoted by the association Protégeles and Smilestone. The aim is to extend it to all schools in the region.

Starting in September, students and parents will receive workshops taught by social media experts, psychologists and pedagogues, and will have the opportunity to take advantage of new technologies

The phonbies

The starting idea of The Phonbies is a video emulating a supposed zombie movie, but mobile addiction also has a solution. The video will be included as a trailer in the cinemas of the Autonomous Community, and the campaign will be accompanied by posters present on the Madrid Metro network.

Parents and children can check the website The Phonbies where they explain the symptoms of technological addictions and what should be done and what not with new technologies. Equally, in September a short film competition made with mobile will be convened on the responsible use of new technologies in which schoolchildren may participate. The winner will have the opportunity to attend the Cinephone International Festival in its next edition.

Why this initiative?

65 percent of children between 10 and 15 years old have a mobile phone, and almost 94% use the computer. According to the Protlégeles studies, only one in three of the children which usually uses the Internet, aims to search for information, since most conceive it as a leisure tool.

Speaking of mobile devices, only 24 percent make daily calls, so most use it mostly to send messages. It is very surprising that 78 percent have already had more than one device (let's see if they will change more than their parents! How can that be?).

On the other hand during 2013, the Office of the Public Prosecutor of the Community of Madrid registered an increase in the crimes of harassment of minors through technology; not only that, but 7.6% of children who comply with judicial measures, they do it for facts that are related to the use of ICT.

In addition to the workshops in schools, the Community and the Association Protégeles will collaborate through the telephone 012 answering calls to answer questions about the uses of social networks and detect possible problems. Telemarketers will receive advice from the Association to answer calls

I can only applaud the project, and point out as positive the fact that the actions are also aimed at parents, because without their example, children will hardly internalize the recommendations.

And is that parents queuing with the child in a public administration and using both the mobile (instead of lightening the boredom of the child), others who communicate within the same house through instant messaging, and those who avoid spending a while reading or playing with your children, to keep up to date with notifications, updates, emoticons and so on ... they do a disservice to the education of the children in these subjects.
