Teen pregnancy prevention is still a pending task

'Pregnancy bursts into teenagers' lives when they are in the process of physical and mental development, something that has important consequences both from a biological and psychological point of view.' Between the 5th and 7th of June the II Latin American Congress of Pediatrics has been developed, and - among others - experts have debated about pregnancies in teenage girls.

Currently, and according to the INE, our country assumes a teenage pregnancy rate of 20 per thousand. For every thousand teenagers, there are 12 births. The prevention of unwanted pregnancies is still a pending task; and it will be as long as society, school, family, health professionals, and rulers, do not get involved in a common task.

It often happens that pregnancy is the result of unstable relationships, in which couples end up separating (it is not always the case, but it is indicative). So these girls end up assuming maternity alone.

Alone (or supported by their parents), and with many difficulties to continue studies, which causes worse job expectations

Thus, we must use the information as a preventive tool: on the one hand facilitate access to advice, and on the other hand facilitate the acquisition of contraceptives.

The Spanish Association of Pediatrics, in a note after the aforementioned Congress, understands that the role of the health sector can still improve. In particular, special treatment is still denied to adolescents, which causes its withdrawal.
