A police officer gives his union hours to another so he can take care of his son with leukemia

Every year, many cases of cancer are diagnosed in children, a situation that is usually very hard for families, because in addition to diagnosis, there are expenses and many things to do. One of them is the time that should be devoted to accompanying and caring for children during their treatment.

This is not always easy due to the current pace of life, because not all jobs give a permit that can be adjusted to the needs of these families. However, in a recent case we have seen a great gesture of humanity, because a policeman has yielded his union hours to another partner, so that he can take care of his son with leukemia.

Carlos Ortiz is a National Police agent assigned to the IPU (Police Intervention Unit) of A Coruña and father of two children. The least of them, of only 18 months, he has been diagnosed with type B lymphoblastic leukemia, the most serious for children his age.

Due to his illness, the child must be accompanied 24 hours a day, as well as go to the hospital almost every day and stay there for many hours to continue his treatment. This is naturally a situation that is difficult for the family, because Carlos and his wife both work and also have to take care of their other son, who is three years old.

Carlos had requested a full paid permission to be able to accompany his son, however, the General Police Directorate only granted him 50%, which continued to be insufficient for the family needs and those of his youngest son. And that is when Roberto González appears, turning around the situation of Carlos and his family.

Roberto is the spokesman for the Unified Police Union, and had been released from daily police work for four years, in order to defend the employment situations of the National Police agents in Galicia. Carlos is also a member of the union, although both policemen didn't know each other personally.

However, hearing the story of Carlos and his son, and the difficulties he was having in order to assist him, such as asking to be transferred to Zaragoza so that his and his wife's families could support them, Roberto decided to take action and help, donating Carlos his union hours so that he can accompany his son.

As we mentioned, due to his position Roberto is free to serve as an agent, and was dedicated to the tasks entrusted to him by the union. But now, He has given Carlos his 24 hours a day of union release, in a gesture that has touched everyone.

In an interview for La Voz de Galicia, Roberto says he decided to take action when he saw that time was passing and did not value the seriousness of the case and the needs of Carlos: "Anyone in my place would do the same. This is really a problem, with which we have to turn"he commented.

Fortunately, when Roberto presented his proposal to support Carlos in front of the union executive in Galicia and at the central management in Madrid, everyone supported him. After this decision was made, both cops finally met and hugged each other excitedly at the Lonzas police station, in A Coruña.

"What Roberto has done by giving me his release so that I can take care of my son is a gesture I will never forget. It has been offered in an act of humanity", says Carlos gratefully, and tell that your child has had improvement and has walked again, because he had stopped doing chemotherapy.

For his part, Roberto must now combine his police work with that of the union, but He claims to be satisfied with his content and made by his decision: "I better worry than my partner, who now has to focus on his son".
