Homeopathy for babies: why it doesn't work even when “my child works for it” (II)

After an entry in which we explain the principles of homeopathy to know what is and what is not yesterday we started the topic of homeopathy and the placebo effect, which is the same as saying that it does nothing, showing the related scientific studies.

Today, continuing with this issue, we are going to talk a little more about the placebo effect and of babies and children, because although it seems a lie, they also "suffer" the placebo effect. That is why we must say that Homeopathy does not work even when people explain that "my child works."

Homeopathy may work beyond placebo

Some studies suggest that homeopathy works beyond placebo and in some cases it is true that this difference occurs. The explanation is none other than the attention received by the homeopath.

The theory says that a good homeopath must know the person, their customs, their needs, their way of seeing life, living health and living disease, etc. Come on, before giving a remedy you have to know the person in various areas of life, which is equivalent to talking little and listening a lot.

Accustomed as we are to the doctors listen to us for 30 seconds, diagnose us in two minutes and prescribe something in the remaining 3 minutes of consultation, going to a homeopath's consultation should be a joy. He asks you things of your life, he listens to you, he speaks to you calmly, he transmits you peace and good vibes and above, in the end, he gives you something that prepares especially for you.

It is normal then that this remedy acts better than a placebo delivered by hand without attention or active listening of the sufferings and problems of each person.

But children also get better

Many mothers explain that their children have improved since they are taking homeopathy. It may be, I do not say no, but that improvement cannot be due to homeopathy (because it does nothing, I repeat), as can be seen in this systematic review of related studies in which 91 studies with homeopathy were analyzed in children aged 0 to 19 years, whose conclusion says that "The evidence of rigorous clinical studies related to the treatment or prevention of diseases in childhood and adolescence with homeopathy is not convincing enough to recommend it in any case".

The placebo effect also exists in children., Even if it looks like a lie. Knowing that the placebo effect is based on the autosuggestion of a person, who believes that with something he is taking he is going to heal, children also seem to be able to suggest that they will be cured.

I think that everyone as parents has healed wounds and pains with water, blowing or even singing a song or reciting a “cure, heal, heal, heal, if you don't heal today you will heal tomorrow”. We do nothing to them, it is absurd, but children "heal."

By this I mean yes, they are suggestible as adults and not only that, but they are more so than adults (to me the "cure, heal" does not cure me anything). That is why sometimes we say "drink some water and you will feel better" and believe it or "take this syrup that you will find yourself better", being perhaps true if it is real syrup and feeling better if it is homeopathy.

This effect is so well known in children that even false pills for children have been invented, whose name is Obecalp (upside down Placebo), which are nothing more than strawberry caramels, very useful when they say they are bad or something hurts and We want to cure them with nothing.

On the other hand, acute diseases, sooner or later, suffer what is known as mean regression, which is what happens when something is in an almost extreme place. Statistically, when something goes very badly, very badly, it is most likely that it will gradually get better, because worse it is difficult for it to go. Likewise, when something is going very well, very well, the most logical thing is that at some point the thing will get worse, because maybe it is difficult for it to go.

That is why it is often said that "after the storm comes calm" or that "it does not rain forever". When a child or an adult is sick and ill (I speak of mild illnesses) the most logical thing is that it will get better, whether I take homeopathy, I already take conventional medicine. This happens almost always because most diseases of children are more or less banal ... come on, that with little or nothing, they are cured (such as the flu or colds, that if you take homeopathy heal in a week and if not you take nothing heal in 7 days).

Concluding

There is no serious scientific study to prove that homeopathy works and the logic says that the most absurd thing about the matter is that they get to do studies about it. If homeopathy is nothing more than a solute diluted to satiety, leaving only water, what is the point of doing studies knowing that the results will be negative?

Homeopathy does no good beyond placebo and if taken as an alternative medicine, in addition to the real one, it does not do any harm either. However, if parents decide to treat their child with homeopathy only, the risk is greater. It will be a low risk in the case of minor ailments, but very high if the diseases are more serious or if they are chronic.

Please, if you care about your children's health, never give them homeopathy. If you also care about your pocket, do not buy homeopathy, which is more expensive than conventional medicine and also responds to the economic interests of some laboratories that, in addition to earning a lot of money, sell something that does nothing (even I could start producing Homeopathic medicines: they are safe, they have no side effects - well, no primary ones - the production cost is minimal and the benefits are incredible).
