“There are no excuses”: no to child sex tourism

"There are no excuses" is a campaign against child sex tourism, that is, against child sexual exploitation on trips. It is an awareness and prevention campaign to reduce this deplorable practice that involves traveling with the purpose of having sexual relations with minors.

This is a worldwide problem that affects children between 8 and 18 years old, mostly adolescents under 15 years old, from disadvantaged backgrounds and who suffer sexual exploitation generally in deplorable living conditions.

The commercial sexual exploitation of children (ESCI) is defined as:

The use of children and adolescents for sexual satisfaction of adults in exchange for remuneration in money or in kind to the minor or third parties. It constitutes a contemporary form of slavery. It includes payment for sex, pornography, and trafficking of children and adolescents for sexual purposes (First World Congress Against sexual exploitation of children and adolescents; Stockholm, 1996).

The campaign addresses the excuses that can (usually) wield) people, mostly men, who do child sex tourism. "Nobody knows me here," "They do it because they want to," "It's normal here," or "With the money they earn, they will help their families." violating children's rights, ending their childhood.

Why the "No excuses" campaign arises

It is the Spanish Committee of UNICEF, with the collaboration of other organizations and NGOs and the support of the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, which launched this project, which we talked about a while ago. His main motivations are:

  • Guarantee the right to protection of boys and girls against sexual exploitation commercial (article 34 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child).

  • The finding that commercial sexual exploitation of children (ESCI) is a growing phenomenon and business (due to the increase and cheaper travel and travel, due to the ease of contact via the Internet with international networks ...).

  • The limited knowledge and social sensitivity in Spain on this subject.

  • The finding that the country is an "exporter" of sexual exploiters.

Among the objectives of the campaign, they are sensitizing the population and deterring the sex tourist through different arguments, as well as getting allies in their dissemination.

The bell "There are no excuses" to eradicate child sexual exploitation on trips, it is still necessary, because in recent years there has been a progressive increase in child sex tourism. And this without forgetting similar realities suffered by many children victims of sexual abuse that do not come from tourists. There are no excuses.
