Giant Baby Statues in Madrid

These two giant sculptures are part, since July 2, of the decoration of the Atocha Station in Madrid. They are the work of sculptor and painter Antonio López, who was awarded 2 years ago with the Velázquez Prize for Plastic Arts.

The two sculptures are framed within the work called "Day and Night". Is about the head of one of the artist's granddaughters. On Day, the girl shows big open eyes and an avid expression typical of babies. At Night, their closed eyes bring us closer to the moment of their sweet dreams.

The sculptures are 3 meters high each and have been located in the AVE arrival area, at the express request of Antonio López, who considered the site as the most suitable for the contrast of his work. It seems to me a precious gesture on the part of an artist, and on the part of a grandfather, to dedicate two sculptures of such immense size to a baby, and divide his work into two moments as significant as the look of a curious girl and the sleeping of the same.

I don't think I will ever see them "in situ", but they inspire me with tenderness and I think they will also produce this feeling in those who see them. No doubt babies also deserve recognition of this type. They are the present and the future.
