Fish oil in pregnancy improves visual and motor coordination of the child

We found the results of a study published in the Archives of Disease in Childhood, conducted by experts from the School of Pediatrics and Child Health at the University of Western Australia, which suggests that the consumption of fish oil supplements during pregnancy improves the development in the visual-motor coordination of the child.

98 women were followed to whom they administered daily supplements of 4 grams of fish oil to some, and olive oil to others, from the 20th week of pregnancy. After almost three years, the specialists tested 72 children, 33 of them were children of women who took fish oil supplements and 39 whose mothers consumed the olive oil supplement. The tests studied language, behavior, reasoning and coordination between sight and manual movement, and the results indicated that the 33 children who received fish oil during pregnancy had a better level of understanding, vocabulary and construction of phrases, but the greater visual-motor coordination stood out even more.

It should be noted that fish oil supplements are safe for the fetus and for the child and that they need to do more studies to deepen the benefits of fish oil.
