"I'm walking!": The overflowing joy of a girl with cerebral palsy taking her first steps will thrill you

The story we share today is a history of struggle, effort and improvement starring a girl from Michigan (United States) named Maya. The girl was born almost five years ago prematurely, and shortly after her first year she was diagnosed with cerebral palsy.

In May he underwent an operation to improve his condition. The doctors told him that maybe he could start walking between six months and one year after the intervention, but just seven weeks later, Maya has begun to take her first steps. And his joy has infected thousands of people!

A life full of challenges

Maya was born with 26 weeks of gestation and after three months of intense struggle in the neonatal ICU, she was discharged.

The first months at home were very happy for the family, and initially it seemed that Maya had overcome all obstacles. But soon, her parents realized that something was wrong, because the little girl lagged far behind in development milestones, such as crawling, standing or walking.

With 22 months Maya was subjected to a test that confirmed what the doctors had been speculating for weeks: He suffered cerebral palsy.

Since the diagnosis, Maya began to go to therapy and her tireless willpower prevented her from giving up. Despite suffering painful spasms in her legs, the girl has walked all this time with the help of a walker, and never stop smiling.

"He wants to run and play with his friends, and not be left behind. She never complains" - her mother told Global News.

On May 9, with four and a half years, the little girl underwent a neurological surgery called selective dorsal rhizotomy, in order to reduce the spasticity of her muscles. With this operation the doctors hoped to give the girl a better quality of life, relieve her pain and perhaps, over time (between six months and a year), the possibility of walking without help.

But Maya has broken all medical forecasts and only six weeks after the operation has begun to take its first steps. The girl's joy is contagious: "I'm walking!", she shouts excitedly while her mother records the incredible feat.

The video was shared on the Facebook page that parents have created to publicize their daughter's case and encourage other families who are going through the same.

The effort of the little girl has borne fruit sooner than expected. His parents say that in all this time he has never given up, and that all his eagerness was to walk and do what the rest of the children his age do. Whether it was pushing a doll cart or its inseparable walker, Maya has not given up on her desire, and there has been no obstacle that prevented her.

Working hard in therapy surrounded by professionals, and reinforcing the exercises at home with her parents, the girl has achieved what no doctor had imagined in such a short space of time. And is that willpower, motivation and ability to overcome are always great allies. Bravo, little one!
