And respect for childbirth? The live broadcast of the birth of the first baby of 2018 in Mexico is controversial

The first babies born at the start of a new year on the calendar are always news. In social networks and media we know the names and basic data, such as the weight or the exact time they were born. But to what extent should information or images of the birth of the first baby of the year be given?

A video posted by the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) on your Twitter account, It has caused controversy among users, because it was a live broadcast seconds after the birth of the first baby of the year, born in one of its hospitals.

About an hour before the end of 2017, on the IMSS Twitter account they published a tweet announcing that they were preparing for the moment when the first baby of the year was born.

# BeforeQueAcabeElAño we coordinate to arrive at the time of the first birth of 2018 in @Tu_IMSS facilities 👶🏻🍼🚼

But probably nobody expected that an hour later, a live broadcast of the first minutes after delivery would be made. Through Periscope, they shared on the same Twitter account a live video of more than six minutes, just a few seconds after the baby was born and with the doctor still attending to the mother.

We received at the Gynecological Hospital Pediatrics 3A this # HappyYearNew with the arrival of the first # baby2018 óthat weighed 2 kilos 680 grams //t.co/XLL3vXRkjr

At the beginning of the video you can see how there are several cameras and cell phones recording the baby and the mother, and a minute later, we see a reporter announcing to the camera that they were present at the birth of the first baby of 2018. Later one of the nurses delivers the baby to her mother, while the reporter continues to speak in a very loud voice and a cameraman approaches them.

Through a statement on the IMSS website, it was reported that the baby is named Stephanie and was born at the 3-A Pediatric Gynecology Hospital in Mexico City, which they claim, It is certified as "Friend of the Child and Mother" Hospital, for promoting natural childbirth, immediate mother-child attachment and breastfeeding.

A very criticized decision

A birth is a unique, beautiful moment and something that should be celebrated, there is no doubt about that. But also it's an intimate and meaningful moment for mom and baby, and therefore, many people did not find it correct that reporters and others were present and also transmitted the birth of the baby live.

Some users on Twitter rated commented saying that they had ridden "a circus", by allowing the presence of so many people who were not part of the health staff.

Terrible decision to turn that intimate moment into a circus. That discredits @Tu_IMSS instead of benefiting it.

What incongruity !!!! This is a circus, expose with video, photographers, NON-MEDICAL personnel in an expulsion room, violating NOM, transgressing modesty !!! Applause 👏🏻 unless that punishes and truncates resident training.

Other people pointed out that it was a disrespect for the mother and that put her health at risk because they could contaminate the area where the birth took place.

How they allow the expulsion area to be contaminated, it is a white, sterile area, and that lack of ethics and respect for the patient's privacy and individuality, something so private tan

Q father but at the same time they pass ... it is a difficult and special time for the mother and the hospital allowing many people to enter!

- Koko (@KokitoMark) January 1, 2018

What disrespect for the baby and the mother, because there the CNDH does not interpose?

- Liz liz (@Liz_Alina) January 1, 2018

Very bad pollution of the area, why IMSS show? There must be sanctions for those responsible.

- Rick (@ Rick3151) January 1, 2018

What a little way to treat a birth! I hope you sue them for violating the privacy of the child and the mother!

- Mon ro (@ monita016) January 1, 2018

What more dehumanized treatment without respecting the privacy of the patient I hope you have been warned that there would be so many people in that room that would see everything and apart would go up to the networks

6 minutes of pure #violenciaobstetrica who is congratulated here? To the cameramen to the doctors? To the IMSS? No to the mother who gave birth, hopefully at least they have not made any rude comment for complaining or not cashing as expected ...

The first hour after delivery is sacred

A few weeks ago, in an interview with Ibone Olza, a child psychiatrist, mother and birth rights activist, she told us that what happens in childbirth is deeply recorded in both brains, and that it is key in the first two hours not to disturb mother and baby, so that they are and not to distract.

We must remember that the first hour of life is sacred to mom and baby and it must be a moment of tranquility, something that clearly did not happen in the video shared by the IMSS, not even in the following minutes, because even an hour later, they published images of the mother in her bed, breastfeeding her baby.

Personally, I consider that all women should have the right to choose how we want our delivery to be (they say she agreed that reporters were present), but privacy during it is also an important part of this, regardless of whether it is First or last baby of the year. Childbirth is a momentous moment in a woman's life, and must always be respected as such..
