Radiological studies that should not be routinely done to children

There are certain radiological examinations that should be done at some point if there is a health problem, but these tests can be aggressive, so you have to study well in what cases they are necessary. The Spanish Society of Medical Radiology (SERAM) has published its "do not do" recommendations, which includes radiological examinations that should not be done.

These recommendations, addressed to prescribing doctors, radiologists and patients, interest us because some refer to tests in children that your children may have had to pass on occasion, probably without considering us, is it really necessary?

Some of them are: TAC of the abdomen in pediatric patients with suspected acute appendicitis, pelvic radiography for suspected hip dysplasia in children under four months, neuroimaging studies in pediatric patients with primary headache ...

Other explorations referring to pediatric patients included in the text are: simple radiography in suspected intestinal invagination, routine imaging studies in children with uncomplicated acute bacterial sinusitis, lateral skull radiography systematically in children with sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome ...

This is a document prepared by 39 Spanish scientific societies, establishing their recommendations to reduce the use of unnecessary health interventions, that is, they have not proven effective, have little or doubtful effectiveness, are not cost-effective or are not a priority.

That is, only tests that have proven useful should be done and seek less aggressive alternatives and decrease irradiation in pediatric patients. On the SERAM website we can download the text "Recommendations not to do" and consult all cases, recommendations, alternatives, bibliography ...

According to the authors of the document, it is good that, together with the professionals of the Radiology Services, patients and their families also know these cases of "not doing", because this way among all a reduction of unnecessary radiological tests can be achieved and this will result in the health and safety of people.
