Children's rights do not disappear when they enter the hospital

Sometimes we have the feeling that when we enter the hospital we stop being full-fledged persons, and the same happens if we are accompanying our children. But Children's rights do not disappear upon entering the hospital, and both parents and health professionals should keep this in mind.

UNICEF and the Spanish Society of Social Pediatrics (SEPS) have put into operation the Network for the Promotion of Health and the Rights of Children REPSDI, through which it is intended that hospitals and health centers in Spain find the necessary tools to become spaces that promote children's rights.

In a context like the current one, it is essential to guarantee in our country the fulfillment of the right established by the Convention on the Rights of the Child to enjoy the highest possible level of health, but we must not forget other rights.

The REPSDI project is based on health promotion, because it is essential to prevent problems in children and adolescents such as obesity or mental health, which are currently a priority. But we wanted to go one step further and, together with talking about health criteria when it comes to caring for children, also their rights must be taken into account.

The project has the support and collaboration of institutions such as the St. Joan de Déu Hospital in Barcelona, the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, the Niño Jesús University Children's Hospital in Madrid, the Son Llàtzer University Hospital in Mallorca and the Department of Social Psychology of the University of Salamanca.

On the REPSDI website we find many interesting documents for health professionals, but also for any parent, such as the "Recommendations on the rights of children in hospitals", the rights of the hospitalized child (and their parents) of whom We already speak to you or others with a title as suggestive as "The walls count: art to humanize a pediatric health space".

It is clear that when passing through the hospital doors the sayings of people do not disappear, let's talk about children, adults or the elderly ... But sometimes it seems that some rights are forgotten, especially when patients are small, and they are deprived, for example, of right to be accompanied, as we have said on occasion.

That is why it seems good news that it has been put into operation REPSDI Health and Children's Rights Promotion Network, is a sign of willingness for hospitals and health centers in Spain to care for children respecting their rights.
